What is Yom Haatzmaut?
On Friday, May 14, 1948, at 4:00 p.m., about 8 hours before the end of the British mandate in the land of Israel, and in accordance with the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine that was accepted in November 1947, the leader of Israel at the time, David Ben-Gurion, announced the establishment of the state of Israel, in a ceremony when the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Hebrew date on which the announcement was made was set for Independence Day.
Independence Day falls on the Hebrew date of the 5th of the month of Iyar, immediately after the Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers of the Wars of Israel and Victims of Actions of Terrorism.
